The guardians of this natural order were a scattered brotherhood of mage-monks called the Wardens of the Root - spellcasters who dedicated their lives not to accumulating power, but to maintaining the balance of the Amber Currents. They lived as hermits in the deep wilderness, meditated for decades to understand the language of the earth, and intervened in the world only when the balance was threatened. There were never many of them. They built no empires, held no political office, and sought no recognition. For a thousand years, this was enough.
